Understanding the Different Types of Adult Incontinence

Even Lego People do the Pee Pee Dance. These were the signs for the restrooms at Legoland in California. Had to chuckle everytime we went in to one.

One of the first steps to understanding incontinence is realizing that, although it may feel like it, you aren’t the only person who suffers from incontinence. According to the National Association for Continence, over 25 million American experience some type of incontinence issue. Although the causes are varied, it’s best to identify the type of incontinence first because treatment methods will vary depending on the diagnosis.

Bladder Incontinence

This condition results in involuntary urine loss, and it is what people commonly think of when referring to incontinence issues. It is also known as urinary incontinence. While this will affect more women than men, nearly 1/3 of people between the ages of 30 and 70 have lost bladder control. There are three different types of bladder incontinence:

  • Urge Incontinence: Everyone is familiar with the “pee dance,” but when you can’t make it to the toilet in time is a reality many people face.
  • Stress Incontinence: Laughing. Sneezing. Coughing. Any of these can cause momentary incontinence.
  • Mixed Incontinence: This is when you might experience incontinence from a mixture of the above types.

Bowel Incontinence

This occurs when either gas or fecal matter is released. Also known as Accidental Bowel Leakage (ABL), this condition affects over 18 million people (some of whom also have bladder incontinence) and is more prevalent in women than men.

Now that you understand the different types of incontinence, it’s also vital to know that there are ways to prevent and treat every type. If you suspect that you might be experiencing the symptoms of incontinence, speak to your doctor. She or he will be able to recommend the best treatment to keep you happy and leak free.

If adult diapers are a recommended treatment option, opt for ones that only use 100% Purified Cotton in the top sheet (the layer that touches your skin) and the back sheet (the layer that touches your clothes). Purified Cotton had undergone the world’s most highly intensive Proprietary Ultra-Purification Process that exists. During this process, every single cotton fiber is washed, cleaned, re-washed, and stripped of all potential biocides and/or fertilizers. After that, the cotton is rinsed with water that you is literally safe enough to drink, hung out to dry, and then tested in a lab to ensure its purity. What’s left is the highest grade of cotton in the world touching your skin. Now that’s something to smile about.
